A major flood risk reduction project for Halls Bayou is one step closer to construction.
Harris County Flood Control District recently reviewed the final design plans for the Halls Bayou Channel Conveyance Improvements Downstream of Hopper Road. This milestone means the project is nearing the point where it can be advertised for construction bids.

Once complete, the project will help reduce flood risk for residents in the Greenwood Village, Woodsdale, and Pinewood Village Park communities.
Improving How Stormwater Moves Through Halls Bayou
The project is designed to widen the existing channel along the east bank of Halls Bayou from downstream of Hopper Road to just upstream of Pinewood Village Park.
These channel conveyance improvements will create additional room for stormwater to move through this portion of Halls Bayou during heavy rain events.
Once completed, the improvements are expected to reduce the area of inundation, or flooding, by more than 500 acres.
Part of a Larger Strategy for Halls Bayou

This project is one piece of a much larger effort to reduce flood risk throughout the Halls Bayou watershed.
It is part of the Watershed-Wide Project Implementation Program for Halls Bayou, which includes more than 20 miles of planned channel conveyance improvements and several stormwater detention basins throughout the watershed.
Together, the planned detention basins are estimated to provide more than 10,000 acre-feet of stormwater storage, or approximately 3.2 billion gallons.
Projects like the Halls Bayou improvements downstream of Hopper Road help build that system piece by piece, addressing flood risk at specific locations while contributing to broader improvements across the watershed.
Why the Design Milestone Matters
Flood risk reduction projects move through several stages before construction can begin, including preliminary engineering and design.
Reaching final design means Flood Control District engineers have worked through many of the details needed to turn a proposed improvement into a project that can be constructed.
That brings the Flood Control District another step closer to putting the planned improvements on the ground and delivering additional flood risk reduction benefits to surrounding communities.
The Flood Control District will continue sharing updates as the project moves toward construction.
