As Executive Director Marcus Stuckett leads the Harris County Flood Control District through an ambitious period of project delivery, he says success will be measured by more than construction schedules.
For Director Stuckett, being open and responsive with Harris County residents is also an important part of the job.
“We understand that we are beholden to the residents of Harris County,” Director Stuckett said. “I want to be able to restore that trust by communicating honestly, communicating with transparency about our successes as well as some of the challenges that we face while we work on these projects.”
That approach includes being direct when projects encounter challenges or when an update may not be what residents hope to hear.
“People are a lot more receptive when they feel like you’re being honest and you’re being responsive,” Director Stuckett said. “Sometimes I may not have good news to provide, but at least the public can say that they’ve gotten the truth out of me.”
Director Stuckett also credits Flood Control District employees with bringing their own sense of urgency and commitment to the work.
“Everybody’s behind it. We’re all hands on deck,” he said. “Everybody just wants to get projects done.”
For Director Stuckett, returning to the Flood Control District also meant returning to a team and mission he knows well.
“The employees want to get the work done,” he said. “We want to be responsive and we want to provide the service that we promise that we provide.”
That commitment extends beyond the organization. Flood risk reduction projects often require coordination among engineers, contractors, government partners, and the communities where work is taking place. Director Stuckett said residents are an important part of that process.
“It’s not just the Flood Control District who makes decisions,” Director Stuckett said. “It’s a community that we have to work with.”
As the Flood Control District continues advancing projects across Harris County, Director Stuckett said his focus is on pairing that urgency with clear decision-making, responsible use of public funding and open communication with the people the organization serves.
