What does it take to maintain flood control infrastructure in downtown Houston? Sometimes, it takes divers.
Divers are inspecting underwater steel walls along the Buffalo and White Oak bayous near Allen’s Landing — work that takes place in dark, murky conditions below the surface.

These walls have helped hold bayou banks in place for more than 30 years. Recent testing identified damage and areas where the walls’ corrosion prevention system has weakened. The underwater inspections will help determine the repairs needed.
The next phase will include underwater welding and installation of a new cathodic protection system at the bottom of the bayous to help reduce future corrosion. Estimated completion: Q1 2028.

Trail closures may be needed during construction. Signs and barriers will be in place to help guide trail users.
This project is part of our increased investment in maintenance to preserve and strengthen our flood control infrastructure.
