Across the Barker Reservoir watershed, aging flood control infrastructure has led to erosion, sediment buildup, and damage in many channels. Left unaddressed, this damage reduces how much stormwater these channels can carry compared to their original design capacity.
That’s why major maintenance work is now underway. The Flood Control District is restoring these channels to ensure the watershed continues to function as intended.
Construction efforts include the following three projects:
Rehabilitation of Channels Inside the Barker Reservoir
Focusing on four channels within the reservoir, our maintenance team is:
- Removing sediment
- Stabilizing channel slopes
- Repairing outfall pipes
Residents may see construction fencing along some trails to clearly separate active work zones. A pedestrian bridge in George Bush Park, just north of the soccer fields on Westheimer Parkway, is expected to be closed for the duration of construction. Signage and barriers will be in place to guide trail users.
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has jurisdiction over the Barker Reservoir. The Flood Control District has easements along certain channel segments within the Barker Reservoir that allow maintenance activities.
Estimated Completion: Q1 2027
Barker Channel Restoration & Rehabilitation Project
This large-scale, $10 million project will restore channels at nine upstream sites identified so far. Planned work includes:
- Repairing erosion and slope failures
- Removing sediment buildup and blockages
- Restoring channel linings and outfall structures
Estimated Completion: Q1 2031
FEMA Sediment Removal Program
The Hurricane Harvey Disaster Recovery Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Sediment Removal Program will remove excess sediment that was deposited in the Barker Reservoir watershed due to extreme flooding conditions during Harvey.
In all, nearly 2,000 cubic yards of sediment are expected to be removed from the Barker Reservoir watershed, or enough to fill about 200 dump trucks.
Estimated Completion: Q4 2026
Together, these projects strengthen a stormwater conveyance system that serves thousands of homes and businesses in northwest Harris County.
