The warm weather that arrives this weekend will continue through Christmas.
For the Houston area, we are expecting temperatures to fall into the 60s on Christmas eve with some areas of fog possible overnight, especially near the coast. On Christmas day, low temperatures are expected to be in the lower to middle 60s, with high temperatures rising into the upper 70s to lower 80s. No rain is expected.
How often do we see temperatures reach 80 degrees on Christmas? Well, looking back at the last 25 years (2000-2024) at Bush airport, our official climate site for Houston, we have hit 80 degrees or more just 4 times, with the warmest being 83 degrees in 2015. That 83-degree high is also the record for Houston on Christmas when looking at the entire period of record. At Hobby airport, the warmest high was 84 degrees in 2021, and during that same 25-year period, we have seen the temperature reach or exceed 80 degrees 3 times on Christmas.
The coldest low temperature we have seen in the last 25 years at Bush airport was 26 degrees, occurring just 3 years ago in 2022. At Hobby airport, the coldest low temperature was 28 degrees, which was also reached in 2022. Note: the record Christmas minimum for Houston (period or record) is 11 degrees set back in 1983.
When averaging the Christmas highs/lows at Bush (Hobby) airports (2000-2024), the average high is 62 (63) degrees, and the average low is 44 (45) degrees. Therefore, Christmas day this year is expected to be 15 to 20 degrees above those averages!
