Flooding affects every community in Harris County, and preparing for the future requires input from residents across many different backgrounds. The Harris County Flood Control District has continued to take steps to make its public meetings open and accessible to everyone.
The Flood Control District is leading countywide planning efforts such as the Harris County Flood Resilience Plan and the Solutions for Advancing Floodplain Evaluation and Resilience Study (SAFER) Study. These efforts focus on long-term strategies to reduce flood risk, improve infrastructure, and strengthen communities. Strengthening communities begins with listening to their needs, since each community may face different challenges and priorities. To meet those needs effectively, the Flood Control District has become a leader in accessibility efforts for large-scale infrastructure projects.
For in-person meetings, the Flood Control District regularly provides on-site translators for Vietnamese, Mandarin, Spanish, and American Sign Language. For virtual community engagement sessions or smaller workshop settings, translation and accessibility services are also available or can be arranged if requested in advance.
