The Harris County Flood Control District highlighted visible progress this morning on the Greens Mid-Reach Channel Conveyance Improvements Project near Aldine Westfield Road.
The project is part of the larger Greens Bayou Mid-Reach Program, a long-term effort to reduce flood risk in the Greens Bayou watershed. The work will help increase the amount of stormwater the channel can carry during heavy rainfall events, reducing flood risk for nearby homes, businesses and roads.
This project is also part of the Flood Control District’s broader Community Development Block Grant Disaster Recovery (CDBG -DR) program. During this morning’s media opportunity, Dr. Tina Petersen emphasized that the focus remains on delivery.
“I am focused on execution and delivery,” Dr. Petersen said. “I am here to talk about the projects, the progress, and the work we are working on.”
The Greens Bayou Mid-Reach Program includes approximately 11 miles of channel conveyance improvements and five stormwater detention basins. More than 8,200 acre-feet of the required stormwater detention capacity has already been completed.
Segment 1 of the channel conveyance work is now underway. The contractor has mobilized, and construction activities include stabilized construction access and possible clearing, pending required environmental checks. The segment includes approximately five miles of improvements between John F. Kennedy Boulevard and east of the future Hardy Stormwater Detention Basin.
The project reflects the Flood Control District’s continued work to move federally funded flood mitigation projects from planning and permitting into construction. Dr. Petersen said nearly all of the CDBG-DR projects are now either under construction or moving toward construction, with one project still awaiting federal environmental clearance.
The Flood Control District is continuing to make historic progress in flood risk reduction projects and maintenance efforts thanks to voter support and dedicated staff. Stay informed by following us on social media.
