For Dr. Tina Petersen, Executive Director of the Harris County Flood Control District, serving the community is the most meaningful part of her role. “What I love most about my job is getting to deliver on behalf of Harris County residents.” Her work focuses on helping move projects forward that reduce flood risk and support safer, stronger communities.
Dr. Petersen’s path to engineering was not a traditional one. “I started out really going into biology… I thought that maybe I wanted to be a doctor.” Through her studies, she developed a deeper interest in understanding the natural world. “What I wanted to do is take that knowledge and then go and actually be able to solve a problem,” she said, pointing to flood mitigation as one example. That shift led her to engineering, where she could apply scientific knowledge to practical solutions that benefit communities.
Dr. Petersen also emphasized that diverse perspectives and experiences strengthen engineering teams. “I think people have a preconceived notion of what and who engineers are,” she said. At the Flood Control District, she noted, team members come from a variety of backgrounds, including science, and bring diverse ideas to the work.
Today, Dr. Petersen leads teams across Harris County advancing flood risk reduction projects, maintenance efforts and long term planning. Her journey reflects how curiosity, problem solving and a desire to serve can lead to meaningful careers. She continues working alongside engineers and professionals dedicated to supporting Harris County residents.
The Flood Control District continues making progress on flood risk reduction projects and maintenance efforts thanks to voter support and dedicated staff. Stay informed by following the Flood Control District on social media.
