Four channels inside Barker Reservoir are receiving important maintenance as part of Harris County Flood Control District’s continued investment in maintaining and strengthening the region’s flood resiliency.

Over time, sediment buildup and erosion have affected the condition and performance of these channels. This maintenance project will restore the channels to their original design and help ensure they continue supporting the reservoir’s role in managing stormwater and reducing flood risks for surrounding communities.
As part of the project, crews will complete several key improvements, including:
- Removing accumulated sediment from the channels
- Repairing eroded channel slopes
- Fixing outfall pipes that help support proper drainage
Residents who visit areas near the project may notice construction activity, including fencing along some trails to clearly separate active work zones. A pedestrian bridge in George Bush Park, located just north of the soccer fields on Westheimer Parkway, is expected to remain closed throughout construction. Signage and barriers will be placed to help guide trail users safely around the work areas.
This project addresses deferred maintenance needs that were previously delayed due to limited dedicated funding. As part of an increased focus on infrastructure upkeep, the Flood Control District is prioritizing maintenance efforts that help preserve existing systems and extend their effectiveness for years to come.
Maintenance work on the Barker Reservoir channels is expected to be completed by the end of the first quarter of 2027. Once finished, these improvements will provide long-term benefits for neighborhoods and communities upstream of the reservoir by helping maintain reliable flood control infrastructure.
The Flood Control District is continuing to make historic progress in flood risk reduction projects and maintenance efforts thanks to voter support and dedicated staff. Stay informed by following us on social media.
