Behind every flood control project in Harris County is a team you rarely see — but whose work shapes nearly everything the Flood Control District builds.
The in-house Surveying Team is the “keeper of vertical data” for the county. They maintain more than 1,300 reference markers — essential GPS points that guide construction, drainage improvements, and maintenance projects across the region. Of these, about 500 benchmarks become critical lifelines during flood events, supporting emergency response and hydrologic modeling efforts.
Maintaining accuracy is no small task. Each marker is inspected annually, and the high-priority 500 are double-checked before every hurricane season. This careful upkeep ensures the data behind flood control projects remains solid year after year.
But their role extends far beyond benchmarks. The Surveying Team assists nearly every department — confirming property boundaries, resolving land use questions, supporting grant applications, and stepping in when time-sensitive fieldwork is needed. Their quick response keeps projects moving on schedule and builds trust in the data driving flood reduction.
As Harris County grows and flood risk reduction expands, this team’s expertise ensures every project is grounded (literally) in accuracy.
The Flood Control District is continuing to make historic progress in flood risk reduction projects and maintenance efforts thanks to voter support and dedicated staff. Stay informed by following us on social media.
